Transhumance (Stock Migration)

In Blera in September you can see in the square the carts pulled by oxen and hundreds of horsemen wearing the classic costume of the butteri - Italian cowboys.

It is the beginning of the re-enactment of transhumance, that is the ancient tradition of sheep shepherds who moved the flocks twice a year to allow the animals to find fresh meadows.

The routes were called tratturi and connected the summer mountain pastures with those of the winter plains.

Throughout the year you can go horseback riding in the Tuscia countryside but in the third week of September all the butteri and equestrian associations join the ancient journey of transhumance.

The total itinerary lasts a week and starts from Vejano where, following the ancient Via Clodia, it arrives in Barbarano Romano and Blera.

It then continues to Civitella Cesi, Monteromano, Tolfa, Canale Monterano and Oriolo Romano.

Butteri and Horseback Riding

Blera is in the area of ​​the Lazio Maremma has always been dedicated to breeding with horses and over time have developed traditions that still survive.

The Italian cowboys are called butteri and saddles are special and with a shape suitable for spending long hours on the animal.

The horses are of an Italian breed and are still raised on farms scattered throughout the territory.

In Pratoni del Vivaro in Rocca di Papa is the federal equestrian centre, CONI, first used during the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.

Known by all equestrian enthusiasts, this large plateau of Arcinazzo Romano is suitable for international competitions of high level in the ‘eventing’ discipline.

The riders and guests can share mountain living with the adrenaline of horse competitions.

The festival of the mountain event takes place on a plateau called "I prati" (meadows) of Cottanello.

The association riders of Cottanello organizes an equestrian carousel, with the possibility the visitors to ride also.

The association is engaged in rearing and exploitation of Tolfa horses, a dying breed.

During this event an exhibition is also held of mongrel dogs with a prize to the winner.
