On the top of the Pescorocchiano hill is Nersae, one of the most important archaeological sites in the Salto Valley.
It was the capital of the Res publica Aequiculorum (population of the Aequi) of which Virgil also speaks in the Aeneid.
The site is closed by a stretch of Cyclopean walls from the 4th century BC that delimit the area of the acropolis with the sacred temple of Nersia.
The Romans assigned Nersia to the Gens Fabia and elevated it to a "municipium", and the forum, the remains of the baths and other public buildings can be recognized.
