The most important road in Fondi is the Appian Way, which connected Rome with Capua and Brindisi.
A long stretch of about 3 km is preserved inside Monti Aurunci Regional Park.
On the sides of the road are amazing archaeological sites starting with a shrine dedicated to Apollo that ‘climbs’ up the terraces.
The Roman road for long stretches preserves the original basalt paving, renovated by the Emperor Caracalla in 216 AD.
In 1568 the Viceroy of Naples rebuilt the local bridges (including the one on the spectacular trench of St. Andrew).
In this area you may notice a rest station of the first century. B.C. with a cistern in ‘opera incerta’ (not well constructed).
