Civita di Bagnoregio is the ancient medieval village of Bagnoregio reachable only across a pedestrian bridge built in 1965.
Like many places in the area, it stands on a 70-meter-long 'tufa' island, which floats on a sea of clay, between valleys of the Chiaro and Torbido rivers.
All around a lunar landscape made of large gullies and sharp peaks.
Civita is located on this hill at an altitude of 443 meters above sea level.
It was probably connected to the others but over time has been isolated due to its strange geological conformation. The layer of tufa splits apart and gives rise to landslides due to the erosive action of the waters on the underlying clay layer.
The centre is one of the most impressive of Italy and is candidate as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
