Fiumicino. Castiglione delle Monache in Torre in Pietra

Castiglione delle monache (Castle of the monks) is oldest part of town known as Torre in Pietra (Stone Tower) in prehistoric, Etruscan and Roman times in Fiumicino.

It had its heyday in the twelfth century when it was an important fortified town with walls, towers and churches.

In the fifteenth century it was abandoned and became a quarry for building materials for the eighteenth-century castle.
