Ponza. Eel fishery and Grotte di Pilato (Caves of Pilate)

The caves of Pilate and the Eel fishery of Ponza are of Roman-era fish ponds, connected with the sea and each other through the tunnels were part of a Roman imperial villa.

Their use was probably connected to the rearing of morays.

Roman marble statue, of oil lamps and an interesting mosaic floor were found in the caves.

The Pilate caves can be admired only from the sea.
