The Europe square is the heart of San Lorenzo Nuovo and is an interesting example of eighteenth-century urban planning.
The new city was born at the intersection of the Via Cassia and Via Maremmana leading to Orvieto.
The construction was promoted by Pope Pius VI, then apostolic treasurer, who induced Pope Clement XIV to transfer the whole population to a healthier place.
The project was entrusted to the architect Francesco Navone, who was inspired to Amalienborg Square in Copenhagen, octagonal, starting straight and wide streets that intersect at right angles.
When he became Pope, Pius VI worked to complete the work and in the chosen area, a vast plain on the hill overlooking the lake, and here in San Lorenzo Nuovo was founded and were re-established all the services.
