Fontechiari. Hermit of Saint Onofrio

Fontechiari. Hermit of Saint Onofrio

The hermitage of Saint Onofrio in Fontechiari is a large cave divided into three spaces, walled and frescoed like the Sassi di Matera, with images of Sant’Onofrio.

On the outside wall, in addition to the many graffi ti of the pilgrims, there is a painting from a fi ne school of a Madonna with Child dating back to 1500.

On the altar there is the figure of the saint with a series of panels depicting his life.

Outside, a tall tower highlights the community’s involvement in the worship of the saint.

Entering one notes a pool of spring water in the rock for those sick with fever.
