Monterosi. Lake Janula

Monterosi is by the Nature Reserve of Lake Bracciano - Martignano and in its territory lies the small Lake Janula Monterosi. It is in a small crater of circular shape with a diameter of just 600 meters.

The name Janula probably dates from the Roman god Janus, God of Interests.

It was mentioned for the first time in a bull of Pope Innocent III in 1203 as "piscaria in Janula".

In the early Middle Ages it was said that from the depths of the Lake Janula emerge from time to time a dragon to announce disastrous events.

The area has great geological and natural interest with many aquatic plants and it is a stopping point for many marsh birds.
