Villa of Horace

Licenza. Villa of Horace

At the base of Colle Rotondo (perhaps The Mons Lucretilis Oraziano) in Licenza are the remains of the Villa of Ozi of Horace in Sabina that the poet had described accurately. The villa had been given by Maecenas in 33 BC.

The clues that they did it are identified as: the proximity of an abandoned sanctuary the 'Goddess Vacuna', the proximity of a source (Fons Bandusiae) and a stream.

But perhaps Horace had two villas in Sabina: one at Licenza and another at Vacone.

The villa is divided into three parts: the house, a cryptoportico (covered archway) with the main entrance and the thermal baths.

Overall, following the 'otium' villa model, there is a garden porch, paved areas with mosaics and various cubicula (including one likely to be the poet's bedroom).
