The "Mansio ad Vacanas"in Campagnano di Roma is a Roman post station (mansio) at the intersection of the Via Cassia and Via Amerino realized in the 1st century A.D.
It consisted of an area set aside for the traveller's rest (thermal baths and shops), an area for resting horses (stables and garages), an area used for public activities (soldiers' barracks, market square, verandah with fountain).
Lost of its Roman magnificence during the Middle Ages it was robbed of all marble coverings but continued to be a resting place for pilgrims along the Via Francigena.
