Artena. Pian del Civita Polygonal Walls

Artena. Pian del Civita Polygonal Walls

The polygonal walls that still surround many towns of southern Lazio were built over two thousand years ago.

The blocks of stone so large that for a long time their construction was attributed to the mythical Cyclops, or the people of the Pelasgians.

They are difficult to date, but it now seems certain that the oldest date back to at least the seventh century BC.

The polygonal walls of Artena are located on the plateau overlooking the present village and delimit an ancient city of which the name is not known.

They are 2.5 km long, rather crude polygonal with large boulders and enclose a large area within which there are terraces, roads and cisterns.
