Pico. Roman Roads

Pico. Roman Roads

Pico is located at the intersection of two major Roman roads, the Liri Valley (today SS 82) and an important ancient way of the Roman era for trade between the Abruzzo mountains and the coast.

Along the ancient Roman path are the remains of the ancient trade routes, the town Casella Vecchia was presumably an old tavern and Salarulo had to be an ancient salt market.

Given the shortage of salt in the Abruzzi mountains and dependence on trade, the saying 'prezzo salato’ (heavy price) was born.
