Ponza. Roman cistern

The Roman cistern of Ponza in via Dragonara was dug into the soft tufa of the island to collect up to about 6,000 cubic meters of rainwater.

The tank has many corridors covered with vaults and arranged in parallel rows that intersect with the six perpendicular aisles.

The corridors have a slight slope in order to keep the water always in slight movement and avoid stagnation and the formation of bacteria.

The island had other cisterns, the largest was that of the Parata (or Cave of Pontius Pilate) with a capacity almost double that of the Dragonara.
