Sabaudia. Source of Lucullus and pool of Lucullus

The Fonte di Lucullo - source of Lucullus and pool of Lucullus is a cave built by the Romans to be able to supply themselves with water in Sabaudia.

It owes its name to the patrician Lucullus who had financed the work by hiring Gneo Domizio Armando in 78 BC to build two springs and a water tank.

One spring had to have crystal clear water to be drunk while the other was less refined and was used to feed the famous Roman baths.

This spring was discovered in 1904 under 15 meters of sand and is still active.

The Lucullus pool is instead a large pool used for fish farming which is located not far from Torre Paola.
