Walking through Ventotene one quickly goes back from modernity to the urban plan of the eighteenth that seems just designed by a modern architect.
Ventotene is the result of a political and social experiment by King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon with his "Pragmatism First" project.
In 1771 he colonized Ventotene, just as King Charles had already done in Ponza in 1734.
The Bourbons had chosen these islands for their experiment because they were part of their private property having inherited from their mother Elisabetta Farnese.
Other advanced social experiments include the Hotel of the Poor in Naples and the experiment of the silk factories of San Leucio, in 1752.
