The Abbey of Santa Maria della Gloria (also known in italian as Badia della Gloria) is an ancient monastery in Anagni tied to the story of Cardinal Ugolino
In the twelfth century Cardinal Ugolino, who was born in Anagni and later would become Pope Gregory IX, decided to complete the work of his brother Adenolfo: the construction of a chapel to be given to the Franciscans Fathers.
Adenolfo had chosen some land with a tower and the church was completed and dedicated to St. Martin.
At the same time, the cardinal built a monastery near the Vergine Assunta in Cielo in a nearby area and decided to unite the two churches and move the Franciscans to the centre of Anagni.
History has it that the Abbey of Santa Maria della Gloria was entrusted to the Florensi monks, the order founded by Gioacchino da Fiore that Dante placed among the Blessed in his Paradise.
After an initial flourishing period with the protection of popes Gregory IX and Alexander IV, from 1261 the abbey had to start paying large taxes and tithes and so began its decline.
Since 1700 it has been deconsecrated and used as a dwelling and a farm, transforming the convent into a warehouse and stable.
