Anagni. Church of the Madonna of Loreto

The Church of the Madonna of Loreto is located in the medieval heart of Anagni just next to the town hall and was originally dedicated to Santa Balbina, as an inscription recalls on the entrance portal.

The name change happened because from 1574 it had been assigned to the Confraternity of the Madonna of Loreto.

The medieval church was then transformed into the current neoclassical style in 1750 on the occasion of the jubilee year of 1750 according to the will of Bishop Bacchettoni.

The external façade is very geometric with two rows of pilasters (forms of pillars emerging from the wall) and a central entrance door surmounted by an opening.

The interior is a single room with side chapels and a small dome with a lantern above the area of the high altar. Behind the altar, in marbles of different colours, there is an altarpiece of 1755 realized by Magno Tucciarelli that represents the Transfiguration of the Virgin of Loreto, from which the church takes its name, with at her feet San Magno and Santa Balbina.

In the left chapel there is a precious painting by Taddeo Zuccari, the famous artist born in Urbino in 1529 and brother of the painter Federico Zuccari. The canvas represents San Biagio, Santa Lucia and Sant'Apollonia.
