Anticoli Corrado. Church of St Roch

The small church of St Roch is located outside the historic center of Anticoli Corrado along the ancient path that led to the mountains.

St Roch is the protector from the plague and these churches were often built outside the city walls to protect the village and the population.

Its construction probably dates back to the Middle Ages and then underwent renovation and expansion works in 1656, as can be seen from an inscription.

The exterior is that of a simple stone building, and the facade is enriched only by an entrance door and two side windows framed by plaster.

Its interior is completely frescoed and has a particular irregular shape. It is a single room that ends with an altar area placed in a niche with a semi-cross vaulted roof. Behind the altar is a niche carved into the wall where a statue of St Roch has been placed. On the sides of the room there are two altars framed by totally frescoed arches.

A small bell on an external side wall reveals the presence of a place of worship which would otherwise blend in with the buildings in the area.
