Marino. Basilica of St. Barnabas

The basilica of St. Barnabas in Marino was built by the Colonna family and is one of the largest churches in the Castelli Romani, and the seat of the confraternity of the Marino Gonfalone  founded in 1271 by St. Bonaventure.

The church dates from the seventeenth century and has a Baroque facade in lava stone with an inscription with the date of foundation.

In the two smaller doors are two niches with statues of the two patron saints: St. Barnabas and Saint Lucia.

The interior has three naves and is in Baroque style. Behind the main altar is a painting by Bartolomeo Gennari representing the Martyrdom of St. Barnabas.

In the other aisles there are two polychrome marble altars with paintings depicting the martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew, attributed to Guercino, and Our Lady of Carmel by Louis Gazzi.

In the left aisle there is the statue of Saint Lucia in gilded wood dating from the seventeenth century and on the wall there is a painting by Pier Leone Ghezzi of the seventeenth century.

There is a Christ on the Cross, in wood of the Umbrian school dating back to the fourteenth century.
