Gaeta. Golden Chapel

Gaeta. Golden Chapel

Behind the sanctuary of the Santissima Annunziata of Gaeta you enter the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, or Golden Chapel of Gaeta.

The name comes from its barrel vault of carved and gilded wooden drawers.

The walls are adorned with 19 paintings depicting scenes from the lives of Jesus and the Virgin Mary.

Since 2009, this church is twinned with the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes .

In fact, the Catholic dogma of the Immaculate Conception had been pondered by Pope Pius IX in this chapel during his forced stay in Gaeta.
