Monte Compatri. Church of Santa Maria Assunta

Monte Compatri. Church of Santa Maria Assunta

The origins of the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Monte Compatri date back to the destruction of Tusculum in 1191.

The exiles of the city built a small church dedicated to Saint Bridget, that then became St. Mary of the Assumption in 1600s.

The church was restored in 1633 by Cardinal Scipione Borghese.

Then it was expanded in the nineteenth century with the addition of a rear body.

Its history is linked to that of the castle and it seems that the church was part of the castle itself.

The church bell tower was originally a castle tower.

Inside the church there is a painting inspired by the life of St. Francis, by Cresti.
