Ardea. Church of St. Peter the Apostle

Ardea. Church of St. Peter the Apostle

The church of St. Peter the Apostle was built in Romanesque style in the twelfth century in Ardea by the monks of St. Paul Outside the Walls.

It was built on the remains of a temple of the Hellenistic period.

It incorporates a former watchtower against the Saracens, transformed into a bell tower.

It preserves the oldest materials: marble friezes of the second century were reused as jambs of the entrance, and also a capital of the presbytery and burial altar.
