Ciciliano. Church of Saint Mary Vergine of the Assumption

The church of Saint Mary Vergine of the Assumption is located in the main street of Ciciliano, just below the Theodoli castle and a short distance from the church of Santa Maria della Palla.

Legend has it that it was built in 1795 thanks to a popular collection by citizens who did not want to move from the church inside the castle to the new one built by the Marquis Gerolamo Theodoli.

The peculiarity of the external neoclassical facade is that it is not completely visible from the square and is partly hidden by the other buildings and by the uphill alley that leads to the castle. The building appears to be 'out of scale' compared to medieval constructions and this image immediately brings us back to the history of its construction.

The church is located on the scenographic backdrop closing off the main street of Ciciliano and the main door and the one on the left surmounted by a clock are visible.

The interior has three naves and the central nave ends in an apse and there is an elegant baptismal font and stoup in pink marble from the 16th century. On the high altar there is a 16th century canvas depicting the Assumption of the Virgin made by G. Battista da Navarra.

Above the entrance door there is a beautiful choir loft with an organ.
