The church and convent of St. Bonaventure in Canale Monterano were designed by Bernini and built between 1677 and 1679.
The stories of the convent are quite unique for the number of priest orders to run it who have come and gone.
Initially it was to be given to the friars of the Pious Schools who, however, never arrived at Monterano.
It then hosted the Discalced Augustinians, who were gone after just twenty years since 'did not celebrate the Mass in the agreed number'.
They were replaced by the secular priests, who were discharged in 1719 because they were too expensive,.
Finally the Senario hermits who complained about the unhealthy air and moved.
This monastery was the setting for scenes from the film "The Marquis Del Grillo" with Alberto Sordi.
