Marino. Sanctuary of Madonna dell'Acquasanta

The sanctuaryof Madonna dell'Acquasanta in Marino is a small shrine carved into the rock in 1270.

It was built to place an image of a Madonna dating from the sixth century and initially placed in a niche in the street.

The shrine was a place of prayer for St. Bonaventure.

Under the altar there is still believed to be a miraculous water source.

According to some scholars, a cut in the wall reveals the passage of a Roman aqueduct and the cave was a sanctuary dedicated to the pre-Roman cult of the goddess Ferentina.

The facade is neoclassical and is made entirely of lava stone.

The interior has a nave dates from 1720.

The Rococo altar is of 1759 and protects a block of rock with the fresco of the Madonna and Child.
