Roccantica. Sanctuary of the Madonna of Piedirocca

The shrine of the Madonna of Piedirocca in Roccantica dates back to the eleventh century.

It is known for a fresco above the altar representing the image of Mary enthroned with the Child.

This image is worshipped by the inhabitants of Roccantica and is celebrated on the second Sunday of September.
 

Staircase to the sanctuary

To get to the sanctuary of the Madonna of Piedirocca you must scramble up a stone staircase that reaches the Pope Nicholas II Tower.

Each large step is characterized by sacred symbols in the form of a mosaic.
