Longone Sabino. Sanctuary of Saints Cosmas and Damian

The sanctuary of Saints Cosma and Damiano in Longone Sabino was born from the enlargement of a small country church.

In the VI-VII century, the Benedictine monks built a first parish church dedicated to the patron saints Cosma and Damiano with the classic square plan and the gabled roof.

It is believed that the Benedictine monks had Lombard descent and that they came from the monastery of Farfa.

The monks built the abbey of San Salvatore, the castle of Longone with its small church of Santa Maria and the parish church of Santi Cosma and Damiano.

The parish church of Saints Cosma and Damiano was the place of worship for the population until 1681.

In that year, Don Corinzio Liberali opened the doors of Santa Maria intra moenia (the castle church) to the public and the church of the Protectors became part of the cemetery in the town of Longone Sabino.
