Borbona. Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte

The sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte is located at about 1000 meters on the face of the Borbona mountain, surrounded by green woods.

A Roman building probably already existed as in this area were temples dedicated to the goddess Vacona.

The church was first mentioned by Pope Anastasio IV in 1154 and was entrusted to the custody of a hermit.

It suffered a considerable decline around the sixteenth century until its renovation in 1882.

On the altar of the church-sanctuary is a statue in terracotta work venerated by the population and already described by a visiting bishop in 1561.

On the right side of the sanctuary is the "Park of Remembrance" dedicated to the fallen of the two world wars with an altar and a military howitzer.
