Pozzaglia Sabina. Church of St. Stephen

The church of St. Stephen in Pozzaglia Sabina is mentioned for the first time in 1252 in Rieti church inventory.

Iits appearance dates back to the seventeenth century thanks to the Santacroce family, the feudal lords at that time.

The interior has a nave and three altars surrounded by columns and fake baroque decorations.

On the main altar is a painting of the school of Pietro da Cortona depicting St. Helena who discovers the true cross.

At the two side altars there are a Rosary Madonna with Saints and a Martyrdom of St. Stephen.

In some places of the walls you find fake metopes (rectangular architectural elements) and braided decorations that hide other previous designs.
