Cervara di Roma. The Mountain of Europe dedicated to Peace

Cervara di Roma. The Mountain of Europe dedicated to Peace

It all starts fifty years ago when the great Spanish poet Raphael Alberti described Cervara as a "sculpture in the sky." The rock permeates the country and enters into the homes and buildings shaping them. Since the 1980s, this mountain in the Aniene Valley has become the Mountain of Peace.

In 1984, the sculptor Vincenzo Bianchi, together with his students of the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, began sculpting in travertine the "Staircase of the Artists" and working on the rock with anthropomorphic forms.

In 1986 the artists began working on the rock wall in the central square realizing as if there are two pages of a book in which on the one hand you see figures forced into war, and on the other the flight of Icarus who tries to break free from the mountain.

Then, in 1991 large stone figures were carved in the rock at the base of the medieval fortress. In 1996 and 1997, finally, other sculptures were added and together have created an extraordinary outdoor museum.
