Canale Monterano. Nature Reserve of Monterano

The Nature Reserve of Monterano has a particular combination of geological, floral, wildlife and historical features.

There are some Etruscan burial remains and the ruins of the ancient town of Monterano, with the convent and the church of St. Bonaventure. The hilly areas interspersed with rugged tufa valleys, shaped by the erosive action of the river Mignone, create beautiful landscapes.

From a geological point of view, we observe outcrops of a particular red tuff with black slag.

The memories of the volcanic past of the area can be found in the several thermo mineral water springs, rich in suphur, gases and compounds that give rise to sulphuric activities.

The vapours of the Solfatara (Sulphur bearing grounds) create a striking lunar landscape of great beauty compared to their surroundings.

Within the reserve there is a particularly rocky structure in the shape of man, which is called 'the Indian', whose expression seems to change with the changing light.
