Contigliano. Abbey of San Pastore

Contigliano. Abbey of San Pastore

The abbey of San Pastore in Contigliano was a Cistercian convent founded in 1137 by the monks of Bernardo di Chiaravalle.

During the thirteenth century reaches such importance that it received as a gift from the town of Rieti all the surrounding lands.

In 1234 it was moved due to an outbreak of malaria caused by a marshy area that had been created in its vicinity.

After a happy first period, the abbey had various vicissitudes and changes of management until it was abandoned in the nineteenth century.

Today it has been restored and has become a convention center and a events venue.
