Affile. Church of Saint Mary

The surprising medieval church of Saint Mary is located in the lower square of Affile, just in front of the church of Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian, outside the walls of the ancient castle.

From the outside it looks like a humble building but inside it hides precious frescoes. Its construction seems to date back to around 1000 and it also had the functions of a sacred place in the cemetery.

We understand that it was built in two successive phases as the original nave with arches was lengthened with 2 other wooden trusses. The whole roof is in wood and the joists are joined by polychrome terracotta decorations.

The interior has a single nave with lateral niches with frescoes and you can admire the chapel of the Our lady of Sorrows or of the seven sorrows where a Madonna pierced by seven swords has been depicted and surrounded by images of the painful mysteries.

Finally, the wall behind the altar is decorated with three niches: the largest central one shows the image of the Annunciation.
