The medieval church of Saint Peter is the oldest in Affile and was located outside the walls on a hill which was later occupied by the first cemetery of the village.
Its birth probably dates back to the 6th century when the cult of Saint Benedict began to spread and the first small communities of monks were formed.
The saint performed his first miracle right in Affile. The story tells that Saint Benedict went to Affile together with his nurse Cirilla to escape the decadent life of the city of Rome. By accident, Cirilla broke a grain sieve that had been lent to her by the local women and was seized with tears. St. Benedict took the remains of the sieve in his hand and with his prayer they recomposed themselves into the whole piece.
The echo of the miracle brought so many faithful and pilgrims to the point that St. Benedict fled to nearby Subiaco to find peace and solitude.
Today the church appears with a simple facade that closes with a roof covering and the interior is a single room that ends with a small apse with a fresco also depicting Saint Benedict.
