Agosta. Medieval castle

The medieval castle of Agosta was built on the highest point of the town and is the heart around which the village was born. A first document attesting the presence of the castle dates back to 1051 and due to its proximity to Subiaco, the castle has always been part of the possessions of the Abbey and has always been administered by one of its commendatory.

In addition to the guard functions, the castle therefore had administrative functions and deposit of the tithes that the population had to give to the Abbey.

The village then had its own defense system with walls and guard towers and one entered through two doors: the church and that of Santa Maria.

Today the castle is totally incorporated into the houses in the centre, but its original forms and those of the courtyard can be recognized, which are also referred to in the names of the streets and squares.
