Alatri. Fontana Pia (Fountain of Pius)

Alatri. Fontana Pia (Fountain of Pius)

In 1863 Pope Pius IX made a new aqueduct for the city of Alatri which thanked him by dedicating a monumental fountain in 1870.

The fountain is located in the town centre in Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore of Alatri.

The project was entrusted to architect Giuseppe Olivieri who made a spectacular fountain of  Pius with a large rectangular tank at the base from which rises a spiral structure.

Dolphin and lion heads give rise to an interesting water feature.
