The early cenobitic complex 'Protocenobio of San Sebastiano' is located in Alatri countryside, among the olive trees.
Its construction dates back to the late fifth century by order of the prefect of Gaul Liberius who entrusted it to the abbot Servando.
It housed one of the oldest cenobitic communities of the West, i.e. the first forms of community monasticism. From the meeting with the abbot Servando, St. Benedict founded his order that gave rise to monasticism.
It is thought that here has been drawn up 'Regula Magistri' which was inspired by St. Benedict of Norcia who stayed here in 528 on his journey between Subiaco and Monte Cassino.
The monastery was in use until 1233, then it was given for two centuries to the Sisters of St. Clare and finally since 1908 is privately owned.
The monastery appears as a striking piece of architecture with medieval lines, and the thirteenth-century church contains decorations depicting the life of Christ and the Madonna.
