The Marcantonio Roman Arch is the best known monument of ancient Aquinum.
It is only partly visible because it is semi-buried in the bed of a river probably deflected between the thirteenth and fourteenth century.
Over the centuries it was partly dismantled was common. In fact many Roman monuments were considered relics of paganism or were dismantled to reuse their marbles.
The arch was erected in honour of Marcantonio console (apparently in a single night) when the triumvirate was returning to Rome from Casinum, where he had been a guest in the villa of Varro.
This would have caused the Cicero irony that described the story as a step of "Philippics".
