Arnara. Castle

Arnara. Castle

The castle of Arnara was erected on the ruins of the Lombard Tower. The construction of the Keep occurred in the eleventh century. Four centuries later a series of square towers and a round tower were erected.

The square towers were incorporated into the houses and the round tower became part of the house of the Sisters of the Precious Blood.

The first news we have on the castrum concern the military function of the town. The Castle, of the remains still survive, was largely destroyed.

The most important news of the castle is written in the chronicle of Fossanova the year 1143, in which it says that the Arnara tower fell perhaps due to a military attack or possibly an earthquake.

In 1200 the castle underwent a thorough restoration and its defensive equipment was partially renovated. Subsequent reconstruction are documented including the opening of an arched window in the Romanesque style.

The castle remained the family fiefdom of the Ceccano until the fourteenth century, then it passed to the Caetani and then to the Colonna, who kept it until 1818 when fiefdoms were extinguished.

The view of the castle is characterized by a large and modern water tower built in the shape of a tower complete with battlements.
