The fortress of the Borgias-Santacroce has a special triangular shape with towers at the corners.
The first fortifications date from the eighth century, when the territory came under the control of the Church.
In the fourteenth century, it became a fiefdom of the Anguillara who began the construction of a first fortress for controlling the Braccianese road.
In 1493 it was destroyed by the Borgia Pope Alexander VI and was rebuilt in 1518 by Onofrio Santacroce.
The style incorporates the criteria of military architecture of the sixteenth century sought by the Borgias.
The side of the fortress facing the town is equipped with a moat of considerable width and of a still preserved bridge.
The lower floor is carved into the stone and was used as stables and cellars, and for police and prisons, while the upper is made of masonry and was the residence of the lords of Vejano.
The castle is owned by the Prince Francesco di Napoli Rampolla and only some areas can be visited on request.
