The castle in Canale Monterano was founded as a fortress in the eighth century, when Monterano was a bishopric, and around it was formed the first village.
Definitely it has undergone many changes as evidenced by the different shapes of the windows in both its facades and indoor structures.
Major renovations date back to 1679 when Prince Altieri entrusted to Bernini all the systems of the castle.
Bernini made a porch in ‘faux ruin’ imitating the nearby aqueduct and the fountain.
You can appreciate the shape of the castle at the time of the Prince Altieri, at the end of 1600s, in a painting by Barberi.
