Gavignano. Baronial Palace called Corte Palace

Gavignano. Baronial Palace called Corte Palace

The Baronial Palace is situated at the highest point of Gavignano, and was built by the Counts of Segni, the family of pope Innocenzo III who was born here and named Lothario, in 1160.

It is a true castle-residence of square form.

Tthe palace was originally the Castrum Gabiniani of the Conti family, who at the time had vast holdings in this area. The building dates from around 1000 and was rebuilt according to the different needs of the different eras.

Around this palace the historical core of Gavignano was formed.

After the earthquake of 1495 the palace was completely transformed and became a residence featuring courtyards, large halls and rooms for servants.

In the 1500s Aldobrandini family restructured the building, creating a main entrance floor and an input portal in tuff that bears the name of Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini, who died in 1621.

In the garden inside the castle, where the original entrance was, there is the loggia of the Banditore and a finely carved stone window dating back to 1600s.
