Bolsena. Florentine Gate

Bolsena. Florentine Gate

The Florentine gate of Bolsena owes its name to the fact that it was in the direction of Florence.

It was built in Renaissance style in 1559 as shown on a marble plaque above the door.

Tiberio Crispo, who had been cardinal and then Governor of Bolsena (1553-1562), and whose palace was just a short distance from this entrance, built the gate.

In ancient times it was also called Porta di San Giovanni (St John's Gate) and it is the entrance to the ancient medieval village of the castle.
