Porta San Francesco (St Francis Gate) is the entrance to the medieval village of Bolsena for those coming from Rome.
It takes its name from the monastic complex that was nearby and that today has been transformed into the theatre and the municipal auditorium.
The door is of Renaissance style and dates back to 1548, as recorded in the inscription on a large marble plaque above the door.
It is the most monumental entrance to the city, perhaps because it was the one that the popes passed through when visiting the city.
Next to the entrance, the door has two niches that could hold decorative pieces.
The gate is made of peperino stone with polychrome marble in the upper part.
