Montefiascone. Borgheriglia Gate

Montefiascone. Borgheriglia Gate

The gate is located at the top of Montefiascone, just in front of a beautiful view overlooking the lake of Bolsena.

In the past it was also called Porta Romana because it was the access for those coming from Rome and was therefore the most important.

Its name derives from the Spanish 'borgoro' (village) and dates back to the period in which Cardinal Egidio Albornoz and his Spanish court resided in Montefiascone, around the middle of the fourteenth century.

Its current form dates back to 1702 when Cardinal Marco Antonio Barbarigo commissioned the architect Giovan Battista Oricono to redesign this entrance to Montefiascone.

The architect imagined it as a view of the lake and inserted it inside the palace of the seminary to connect it to the apartment house of the professors.
