Canepina. Castle of the Anguillara

Canepina. Castle of the Anguillara

In Canepina there is a castle called Anguillara castle from the name comes from the last family who owned it.

The first construction dates back to the eleventh century by the Di Vico family, powerful Official Prefects of Rome. The castle was a real military outpost, a castrum, which was to oversee the plain of the Tiber.

At the end of 1800 the Anguillara family was in financial difficulties and transformed a part of the castle into apartments that were sold to private individuals. The remainder was given to the Rem-Picci family as annuity.

In early 1900 this part was divided into civil apartments that were sold while the east tower was donated to the municipality of Canepina.

On the entrance forecourt of the castle you can still see a pulpit from which, according to legend, San Bernardino of Siena preached.
