The sanctuary of Our Lady of the Angels is located a couple of kilometres from the historic center of Canterano in the locality of "Maonna" which takes its name from the sanctuary.
It is said that the first small church was built in the place where the Madonna appeared to a shepherdess and asked her to build a church. Legend says that the shepherdess returned to the village to tell what had happened to her, but she was not believed and she fell ill with pain. The parents of the shepherdess then personally undertook to build the church asking the Madonna to save the girl and her population elected her as the patroness of the town.
It is then told of another miracle performed by the Madonna at the end of the 19th century when she saved the corn crop from an invasion of caterpillars.
The devotion of the faithful to the Madonna was born as early as the eighteenth century and gave rise to the festival which is still today the most important and most heartfelt by all the inhabitants of Canterano which takes place twice a year.
