The seventeenth-century Orsini castle of Montelibretti has a square plan with cylindrical towers at the corners.
It was built on a previous structure, a castle dating back to the IX-X century. This is the period when the inhabitants were driven to build strongholds on high ground to protect themselves from invasion by the Lombards and Saracens.
In the fourteenth century the castle came to the Orsini family who in 1644 sold it to Taddeo Barberini who turned it into a baronial mansion.
