Faleria. Castle of the Anguillara

There are no recorded dates of construction of the first castle of the Anguillara sin Faleria that must have existed as early as 1200.

Its magnificence helps to understand the power of the Anguillara family whose white marble coat of arms with crossed snakes features can be seen in various parts of the castle.

In 1330 the whole castle was completely embattled and was much lower than today and had four round towers.

The entrance is in the church square, and you enter through two broad ‘cordonata’ (stepped ramps) with bases made by two big stubs of ancient Egyptian granite columns.

The main door leads into a large courtyard which had an artistic travertine well, with the coats of arms of Anguillara and the house of Strozzi. The ground floor of the building also housed the prisons.

In the Renaissance, the castle was converted into a palace and defensive walls windows and balconies were built.

There are three elegant lodges in lava stone overlooking the church square. The palace has a quiet elegance and a certain monumentality.
